One thing that I regret the most is not having the support/means to dedicate myself to a small, specific area of expertise (e.g. chess, anything, really). Instead, not having it, I had to cover all the bases, in order to survive.
Promotions should not be into lateral fields. Keep the good workers where they belong, so they can advance their knowledge and become experts. Asking them to do something else is plain stupid.
